Form 1040 with foreign income
For U.S. citizens and residents living or earning abroad, using the foreign earned income exclusion (Form 2555) or the foreign tax credit (Form 1116).
Key dates
- April 15, 2027: 2026 returns and any tax owed are due
- October 15, 2027: extended deadline if Form 4868 is filed by April 15 (an extension to file, not to pay)
- Living abroad: an automatic two-month extension to June 15, 2027
Why it matters
- U.S. citizens and green-card holders must report worldwide income, even while living in Canada or Uzbekistan.
- The foreign earned income exclusion or the foreign tax credit usually prevents you from paying tax twice on the same income.
- Foreign bank accounts totalling over $10,000 at any time in the year must also be reported on the FBAR (FinCEN 114).
