- Return preparation and filing
- Input tax credit (ITC) review
- GST/HST reconciliation
- Account review
- Voluntary disclosures and catch-up filing
- CRA GST/HST notices and correspondence
Key dates
- Register once your taxable sales pass $30,000 in one calendar quarter or over four quarters in a row
- Uber, Lyft and taxi drivers must register from their first ride
- Annual filers: return due three months after year-end (June 15 for individuals with a December year-end, payment April 30); monthly and quarterly filers: one month after each period
Why it matters
- Registering voluntarily, before you reach $30,000, lets you recover the HST you pay on business purchases through input tax credits.
- Business clients often prefer suppliers with an HST number, and your invoices must show it for them to claim their credits.
- Missing the registration can leave you owing HST you never charged, plus penalties and interest.
